Expatriate's Wednesday: Do you have golden rules for your adaptation ?

I found an article this week in an online newspaper that you may recognise, if you can read French and into articles related to expatriation.

The author suggests 10 rules to adapt well into the new host country.

Here they are with my own words that, I think, respect each idea:

1 / Be attentive and take the advice of those arrived before you.

2 / Choose the right accomodation for not having to change again

3 / Never stay with an empty fridge/freezer and do not panic when comes food shopping time and you feel intense frustration in the new supermarket where you find nothing of what you want.

4 / Discover your neighbourhood, your city ,walking

5 / Join all the association of your home contry

6 / Go out, go out, go out, to meet people

7 / Get involved in the community life

8 / Organize your W.E to go out and discover your host country
9 / Learning the local language

10 / Know about what is happening in the city, exhibitions, films, concerts, sport. . .


The great bonus of this paper is to propose something that canhelp thinking and taking action. We must have a first step to move on !

These are generalities, and as such, they can not apply to everyone.
Each individual is unique and probably won't find his way by following all these 10 points.
Of course, with my rebellious spirit, I feel like saying, for each point:,"yes, but ..."

Filling up one's time with loooads of activities, discovery walks, listening to advice ... yes, but ....
The activities will remain rich and rewarding if they meet a true personal value, if they correspond to the values ​​of life which you carry at the time.
And these values ​​will be shaken up, modified by simply the change of your environment and the need for adaptation.

Be attentive not to "fill" in your days simply to fill them as well as not staying in social isolation. Those two points seems to me important to keep in mind.
