The expatriate family unit may acquire a particularly strong meaning for its members
for example;
"My best friend was my sister, she was the only one who was always there, even when we were moving "
The intra relationship of the nuclear family (mom/mum, dad and kids when there are) can be amplified in quantity and in quality, positive and negative
Sometimes the family builds up like a block, that is one way to face various adjustments to difficulties that may arise, this is one typical reaction of a minority group versus a majority
This scenario can also lead to social isolation
That is a potential risk
This belief that the family is a perfect cocoon where everything is going well is an illusion
Sometimes the child opens less to the others, they can restrain their social life as they don't feel the need for it
As an adult if this belief has been maintained , the reality may hit painfully
We also can witness different scenarios, like absent parents very busy with their social life, marital conflict exacerbated. . .
And again ! Nothing here is systematic, yet it does exist and it is important to know to stay alert to the consequences of such behaviour
Have you personally experienced periods such as these, as a child or as an adult?
Brief note on the sociological evolution of expatriate families;
Talking with a school psychologist attached to an international school, there is an increasing representation of single parent families, homosexual parents or expatriation due to the work of the wife.
