Last February, first day in a new school for our three boys.
New continent, new country, new school, new faces, teachers, school system, Third language to learn ... just 'a few' novelties to assimilate that can create a little bit of stress for the kids and ... for the parents as well ;o)
Here I am in the car with my husband and the boys. I have a terrible stomach pain; we know each other very well her and me. We were introduced when I was a teenager, I call her "my pain clamp", I see her as a red round thing hidden in my intestines.
By the way, have you ever tried to SEE a feeling ? This technique allows to handle your feeling with more precision; an efficient way to manage them !
Back to my story; I decide to disconnect myself from my immediate environment to be able to focus on my anxiety. I do not want to transmit it to my family; plus, I do not particularly like the feeling of it !
I begin my visualisation. I imagine my eldest during his day, smiling with other kids his age, going to the school cafeteria, speaking to a teacher, still smiling and I can see him relaxed, well.
It took me about 3 minutes for my pain to decrease from a 10/10 to a 5/10. I guess he was the one I was the most worried about.
I now concentrate on my second child; I go through the same procedure. As I now have lowered my anxiety state, the exercise is even faster. I visualise him playing football with friends (he loves football !) I can see him happy
My anxiety is now at 1,5 / 10
I overdribble with the youngest, done in a few seconds
I feel good now; I can be a much more solid adult for my kids now, help them go through their journey which begins in the car we are in together.
I can joke and smile instead of being all tense; I know they can feel all that.
I have created that anxiety, it wasn't based on any concrete fact but my own beliefs; to shorten my thoughts : "so many novelties, my children are in danger".
Here are the steps I followed
Recognition/Acceptation Of what I am feeling; my 'pain clamp' hurst; I do not reject it, it is part
of me; this is a fact, I go to a love state
Representation This red thing in my intestines
Specificity First day at school for my children in a new environement
ACTION I decide on having a visualisation
Feedback Positive it is ! All is fine
The exercise took me more or less five minutes.
Visualisation is an extremely powerful process
Our brain deals with a visualation in the very same way than it would with a real situation. Stimulated areas are identical. MRI show us that reality.
You can try to visualise; it is simple, fast and really efficient. Like anything else, the more you do it the best; the most efficient.
It is a technique and as such it needs to be well understood as there are precise requirements for it to be efficient; search for them before trying or you may end disappointed !
You can visualise anything you want; that allows you to change a state of mind for example (shifting from Fear to Love), your mind will be ready to open to something new
And you know what ? My boys had had a great day and came back home with that big smile !
