Bonjour, bonsoir ! !
Let’s think
again about
Does expatriation open
our mind ?
Some of you
may know my motto by now:
Expatriation doesn’t create anything that isn’t
within us already
Expatriation reveals what is ready to be
revealed in us and when it is ready to be revealed
So, last
week, I was at a meeting about how does the settling process work for
expatriates; the pluses and the minuses.
Came the
point which stated that :
Being an expatriate opens our mind to the difference.
Hummmm; I do not
think this is that straightforward
Like any
big change, and I do think moving and changing one’s cultural environment is a
big change, expatriating creates a
new chemistry we will have to adapt to.
Some of our personality traits become more important and some others will regress.
All of that, more or less
temporarily.
No, our
personality isn’t still like a lake, but more changing like the sea, depending on
the ‘weather’.
And we will all change in different ways at different pace.
Some of us will be naturally prone to being open minded. And then, at one (probably more) point in our life may be less or won’t be at all.
And some of us aren’t naturally particularly open minded and become more, as being
exposed to the difference;
Expatriation being a big one.
Nurture and
nature: the big and endless debate !
Both nourish our who we are, being
successively more or less significant
For being open
minded, one thing is sure: we have to feel secure.
We need to be in a state
where we feel we are accepted, recognized and loved.
The
opposite state leads us to close up and feel we and our beliefs are the last
secure island where to be: this is a phase we all go through in expatriation, it sometimes become
a frozen state.
But let’s
realize that it is then a way for the person to secure themselves. No need to judge or to feel angry about it; it
has to be respected. Would we judge someone who use a fireproof cover
when facing a fire ?
I have seen
expatriates developing like a new sense of being: feeling, accepting and using very
naturally the social codes which aren’t their owns.
I also have met people who became so close up
that they were intolerant and systematically judging negatively a
targeted culture or any culture other than theirs.
So all in
all, I would say that expatriation provokes the conditions to allow a person to
become more open minded : yes.
Will everybody
become more open minded ? No.
