Non recognition of the expat spouse ?

Hidden, but there, for sure

« (...)This is information for the non-important ones as well (...) »

This sentence was in a letter sent to the employees of a company with quite a revealing typing 'error', mentioning the family as being the ‘non-important ones’

That gives some information about the way the family: spouse and children are considered in the expatriation process … at least in this company.

The p
osition of the spouse could be taken more taken into account as it impacts a lot on the well-being of the family.

A non-negligible proportion of the spouses do not enjoy their expatriation, to say the least.

That fact could be solved by sharing this reality with their life partner.

It isn’t always easy for them.

It isn’t always easy for the partner to find a solution either.

Because this is a reality which isn’t recognized, it becomes an even bigger issue, when it could be properly dealt with a professional and lead to finding solutions.

Here is another example of the incredible attitude towards this population.

This is a message I received a few days ago, coming from a professional from the editing world, specialized in the expatriate world:

“(...)Topics related to the settlement, states of mind / feelings of female expatriates or any other personal issues linked to expatriation are fascinating, but (…)”

I let you decide all that lies in between those lines; the weight of this

'but'

Now

Here is what someone wrote me yesterday: (I do translate it as it was not sent in English)

“Totally in phase with this article

That resonates 100% in me.

Following one’s spouse is very difficult for the woman who, each time has to rebuild, and then destroy, the rebuild again in a new context.

In the long term, we have enough ! (and we are broken inside).

But I do not give up (even if sometimes …) as yes, at the end of my life …. After launching and directing XXX (name of a business)in XXX (name of a city) , I am trying, in YYY (name of another city), de launch another activity that I could carry with me everywhere I go.

But I do feel tired with the process … I am not 20 anymore, even not 30 … but chin up because I do not have other choices or it will be welcoming a big depression !

Thank you for this blog !"

Well, I do thank you for your testimony ! As it is shared by many, even though a silent part of the expatriate population.

These words do say a lot about the feelings that can arise for expatriate spouses.

Can we ignore it ?

My answer obviously is

no.

No because this is unfair

No because it is quite easy to find solutions most of the time when … the recognition of the situation is there !

Who can act ?

Well, Firstly the person who is in this situation. This is the answer to:

What do I really want from my life ?

It is a big question.
It can and has to be be cut into very precise and factual little questions

Do begin the process ! ! !

Alone or helped.

Be your best friend ! Be there for yourself !
